In Spain, residential centres for older and dependent people — residencias de mayores and centros residenciales — house vulnerable residents who need continuous care. To keep them safe, these centres must rely on care-assistant staff trained in first aid and CPR.

Residencia de mayores and centro residencial for dependent people; direct-care staff are Técnicos en Cuidados Auxiliares de Enfermería (TCAE), whose official qualification is set by Real Decreto 546/1995.

The first-aid requirement

The official TCAE title (RD 546/1995) requires applying first-aid techniques, activating the cardiac-arrest protocol, providing basic life support (SVB) and using a defibrillator (DESA); residence staff must be able to respond quickly to an emergency involving older adults.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate is the way to meet these competencies; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
